How to Pick a Dildo

There are many different colors, textures, sizes and shapes of dildos. The selection can be dizzying.

If you break it down a little bit, it becomes pretty manageable. The things that you need to consider include:
• Material
• Size
• Appearance
• Shape
• Vibration
• How you want to use the dildo

Material
There are four basic materials dildos are made: silicone, glass, stone or jelly rubber. The vast majority of dildos that Sugar carries are made of silicone.

Silicone
Silicone is not porous, so it does not absorb bacteria or virus, which means it’s super easy to clean. It’s a perfect material for sex toys!

Silicone quickly matches temperature, so it rises to body temperature quickly. And it’s great at transmitting vibration.

Silicone comes in a number of different densities (stiffness). So, if you’re looking for a dildo that’s squishy, firm or in between, you can find it in silicone. Some silicone dildos use a double pour, so that it’s stiff on the inside and squishy on the outside. That method produces a product that can feel very similar to a penis. If you are choosing a dual density dildo, you may want to go with a dildo that is slightly bigger than a firmer dildo. When dual density enters the body, our muscles put pressure on the squishy part, resulting in the dildo feeling slightly smaller than it appears.

Silicone can be cleaned by washing with soap and water (we suggest using the same soap that you use between your legs). If you want to sanitize your dildo, either boil it for three to five minutes, or run it thru the top shelf of the dishwasher.

Because silicone molecules like to stick to other silicone molecules, it's best to avoid using silicone lube with a silicone toy. Stick with water based lube or coconut oil.

Glass
Glass dildos come in a number of different qualities. The glass dildos that Sugar sells are made by artists with an extreme amount of attention to both design and safety. They are fired at an extremely high temperature for a long period of time. That results in a very strong piece of glass - similar to what you’d find in a casserole dish!

Many people who choose glass love the slickness and the opportunities for temperature play. Because a glass is extremely firm, people often prefer to go down in size a little bit from what they would select in a silicone dildo.

Jelly rubber
Sugar doesn’t sell and jelly rubber dildos. Although jelly rubber is often super affordable, it is also extremely porous and can off gas (emit) chemicals that can cause burning or irritation. If you open up your dildo and it smells like a shower curtain - please don’t put that in your body!

Size
How do you decide what size you want?

Think about where you want to put the dildo. It’s likely you’ve penetrated the area the dildo will be going with your fingers.

Use a measuring tape to get the diameter of your fingers. What's that measurement? Use that as a starting point to pick a size.

The density (how hard the dildo feels) will effect how big the dildo feels. It's a good idea to size down a little bit when picking a dildo made of an extremely firm material (like glass, or extra firm silicone), a a good idea to size up a little bit when choosing an extra squishy dildo, such as any of the dual density silicone dildos.

Shape
What is it about penetration that gets you off? If you aren’t sure, think about the following options.

Some dildos have a head with a ridge that is a little bigger than the shaft of the dildo. Some people find the change in size during penetration very pleasurable, especially at the vaginal or anal opening.

Some dildos are curved. The curve can be a great way to stimulate your G-spot or prostate.

Some dildos get wider at the bottom. For folks who like to feel really full, this can be a great option.

Appearance
Here it’s mostly about aesthetics.

Do you like the idea of a dildo that is shaped like a penis? Do you want it to have balls? Or do you like the idea of a dildo that looks like something else – like a dolphin? Or perhaps just looks like a dildo? What about color? Do you want something that is close to a human skin tone? The color of the sky? Or some sassy glitter?

Whatever sounds fun - there’s probably a dildo that will meet your needs and make your eyes happy!

Vibration
Do you want your dildo to vibrate?

Choose a dildo with a hole in the base for a vibrator, or a rechargeable vibrating dildo.

Quick tip - if you are using a dildo with a small bullet vibrator inserted in a hole in the base of the dildo, put some water based lube on the bullet before you insert it. Remove the dildo each time you’re done using the toy. If you leave the bullet vibe in the dildo for days at a time, it can become very difficult to get it out.

Use a Spare Parts brand harness with your dildo. There are pockets in the harness for bullet shaped vibrators. The way the vibrators are positioned, they can send vibration to both the receiver and the penetrator.

Put a vibrating cock ring on any dildo for extra external vibration!

How do you want to use the dildo?

Using a Dildo with a Harness
Are you planning on using your dildo with a harness? If so, you need to make sure that it has a nice base at the bottom. If it doesn’t, it won’t stay in your harness. If the base ends up being too small for your harness, you can always make the base bigger with a piece of craft foam – or even with duct tape (hey – if you’re doing a mechanic role-play thing – the duct tape could be hot!). If you plan to insert a double-ended dildo into your harness, make sure that you have a harness that either doesn’t have a back pad, or has a removable back pad.

Double ended dildos
In our humble opinion, the double-ended dildos that you may have seen in porn aren’t worth the jelly rubber that they’re made of. But, some lovely folks who have vaginas and who have sex with other folks with vaginas have designed some double-ended dildos that do an incredible job. If you are interested in a double-ended dildo check out the double ended dildos we carry. Some are designed to use with a harness, some without. There’s sure to be one that meets your needs!

Holding a dildo
If you plan to use the dildo to penetrate yourself or a partner while you are holding the dildo, make sure that you think about how much length you will lose when you are holding the dildo. Some folks like to hold a dildo with their hand wrapped around the shaft. Other folks like to hold it with their hands on the base of the dildo. You also may want to look at the Nexus. It is a double-ended dildo with one end shaped so that it works very well as a handle.

Most of all – have fun!!
