Dildos, dildos everywhere.

There are so many different colors, textures, sizes and shapes of dildos it can be dizzying. But if you break it down a little bit, it becomes pretty manageable.

The things that you need to consider include:

Material
Size
Appearance
Shape
Vibration
How you want to use the dildo

Material

There are four basic materials that dildos are made of: silicone, cyberskin, non-specific goo and other (other includes glass, Lucite, rubber, ceramics, etc.) Right now we are going to concentrate on the first three.

Silicone
Silicone is non-porous. It does not absorb bacteria or virus. It can be sanitized by boiling or being run thru the dishwasher. It rises to body temperature quickly. It transmits heat and vibration. Most companies that make silicone dildos guarantee their product for life. It comes in many different colors. It’s more expensive than non-specific goo. Each silicone dildo is handmade. There is a line of silicone dildos that are designed to feel like human skin.

Cyberskin™
A vibrator that can stimulate the clitoris and the vagina at the same time are usually shaped with a long part for the vagina and an attachment at the bottom that stimulates the clitoris. Have you seen the Sex and the City episode where Charlotte won’t leave her apartment because she’s fallen for her vibrator? Well, that was a Rabbit Habit- the most famous of the “two in one” vibrators.

Non-Specific Goo
These are the toys that are often called jelly toys or rubber toys. The actual chemical makeup of these toys is a proprietary secret that belongs companies that make the toys. We do know that they are porous and absorb bacteria and virus. These toys should not be shared and a condom should be used at all times to prevent exposing the mucus membranes of the vagina or the anus to chemicals contained in these toys. These products are usually very inexpensive. They can be a good option when trying to determine what sizes of dildos work well for you. However, they do not last long and some people have concerns about the chemical exposure.

In fact, some people are so concerned about the chemicals (called phthalates) they have chosen to not carry items that contain phthalates in their stores. After looking at the research, and doing a lot of talking, we have decided that it is worth carrying these products. We carry these products because we trust you to use them sensibly, because the studies that have been done to date haven’t convinced us that these products are a health risk and because not everyone wants to make the investment in silicone. If you would like to see more information about the possible health risks associated with these products, check out these links and decide for yourself:

Other
The other kinds of materials are practically limitless. The most common are glass and Lucite. Glass and Lucite are both not porous and do not absorb bacteria or virus. They are dishwasher safe. Glass dildos are most often handmade and are in a higher price range. We suggest that you don’t place dildos made of a very hard material in a harness. Rubber dildos are also available.

Size

How do you decide on size? First, think about where you want to put the dildo and whom you want to put it in. Whether the dildo is for you or someone else, if they are someone that you are sexual with, you probably have penetrated them with your fingers. Think about how many fingers they like have inserted in the area you want to penetrate with the dildo. Then take your hand and get a measuring tape. There you have the width of the dildo. Do the same thing with length.

Appearance

Here it’s mostly about aesthetics. Do you like the idea of a dildo that is shaped like a penis? Do you want it to have balls? Or do you like the idea of a dildo that looks like something else – like a dolphin? Or perhaps just looks like a dildo? What about color? Do you want something that is close to a human skin tone? The color of the sky? Or some sassy glitter?

Shape

What is it about penetration that gets you off? If you aren’t sure, think about the following options. Play around, see what thing (or things) work well for you.

Some dildos have a head on them that is a little bigger than then shaft of the dildo. Some people find the change in size during penetration very pleasurable, especially at the vaginal or anal opening.

Some dildos are curved. The curve can be a great way to stimulate your G-spot or prostate.

Some dildos get wider at the bottom. For folks who like to feel really full, this can be a great option.

Vibration

Do you want your dildo to vibrate? Then you should look for a dildo that has a little hole in the bottom with a space to put a vibrator. You also have the option of using any dildo and putting on a vibrating cock ring.

How do you want to use the dildo?

Using a Dildo with a Harness

Are you planning on using your dildo with a harness? If so, you need to make sure that it has a nice round base at the bottom. If it doesn’t, it won’t stay in your harness. If the base ends up being too small for your harness, you can always make the base bigger with a piece of foam – or even with duct tape (hey – if you’re doing a mechanic role-play thing – the duct tape could be hot!). If you plan to insert a double ended dildo into your harness, make sure that you have a harness that either doesn’t have a back pad, or has a removable back pad.

Double ended dildos

In our humble opinion, the double ended dildos that you may have seen in porn aren’t worth the non-specific goo that they’re made of. But, some lovely women who have sex with other women have designed some double ended dildos that do an incredible job. If you are interested in a double ended dildo check out the Nexus or the Feel Doe. And leave the rest alone!

Holding a dildo

If you plan to use the dildo to penetrate yourself or a partner while you are holding the dildo, make sure that you think about how much length you will lose when you are holding the dildo. Some folks like to hold a dildo with their hand wrapped around the shaft. Other folks like to hold it with their hands on the base of the dildo. You also may want to look at the Nexus. It is a double ended dildo with one end shaped so that it works very well as a handle.

Most of all – have fun!!
