Sugar is closing

This is a post I never thought I’d have to write.

Sugar is closing by the end of September.

We’ve had a good run, a great run. Over the past sixteen years, we’ve received incredible community support and have been privileged to work with profoundly gifted, hard-working, creative, and kind staff. And our customers? You are simply the best. Every day you have honored us by allowing us to witness your commitment to providing yourself and your partners with pleasure and joy. You have chosen to be vulnerable with us and dare to embrace pleasure in a world where too many of us are told we are not worthy of pleasure and joy.

It has indeed been an honor to serve you.

 

What happened?

Since the pandemic happened, our numbers have been down. There are many reasons for that – decreased hours for the health and safety of the staff, increased costs of products, changing market trends, and more.

We can’t afford our rent.

For multiple reasons, moving to a different location is not possible.

Closing is the only realistic option.

I had hoped that if we got to this point, the Sugar Education and Wellness nonprofit would be up and running and able to take over the store's intellectual property and start a new business as part of the nonprofit. But, the nonprofit is not yet in a place to do so.

We will sell through any stock and fixtures currently in the store.

The store's physical location will close as soon as we can clear it out. We will be permanently closed by the end of September.

 

What does this mean if you have a gift certificate?

We will keep the website open until at least September 30th. To use a gift certificate, email [email protected] with a picture of the gift certificate, and I will send you a discount code for the gift certificate to use on the website. Everything we sell on sugartheshop.com will be filled and shipped by one of our distributors. No additional stock will be coming into the store.

 

What does this mean about warranties?

If you have a warranty issue, please reach out to [email protected], and I will do my best to connect you with the manufacturer.

Please give me a bit of grace in responding to emails. It may take as long as 24 hours.

The staff.

We currently have four people who will be without jobs when we close – two full-time and two part-time. These folks are talented and highly reliable. If you have a position for which you think someone would be a good match, please reach out to me, and I will pass on your information.

 

Lastly,

I’m sorry I was unable to keep Sugar going. While I have been ready to move on from the store's day-to-day operations, closing the store was something I never wanted. I’m heartbroken and embarrassed – stewarding Sugar as a community resource was my responsibility. Over the past several years, I couldn't find another way, even with incredible customers and the best staff on the planet.
